Cool developments in photo display

March 30, 2006 by Jon

In the past couple of days there have been some very exciting developments for the display of photo galleries. I posted about Lightbox in this post a few months ago. Well, in the past few days, some people have made significant improvements. The first was Suckerfish HoverLightbox which combines Hoverbox by SonSpring and LightboxJS by Lokesh Dhakar to create a gallery where hovering on an image brings up a 2x version and clicking the image creates a floating full-size version above the active page. This solution requires Javascript and as such is not loved by all.

Enter a CSS only version by CSSPLAY. This is really cool, but you do not get the full-size image floating above the active page. This is because the Javascript in LightboxJS is what allowed the floating full-size image. If you can live without the floating full size image then this may be the gallery for you. I am going to play with both of these on some of the other sites I maintain.

There is also a new version of LightboxJS to try.
